The ISSMGE is the pre-eminent professional body representing the interests and activities of Engineers, Academics and Contractors all over the world that actively participate in geotechnical engineering. As a truly global organisation, the ISSMGE provides a focus for professional leadership to some 90 Member Societies, around 20,000 individual members, and around 1000 experts working in more than 36 Technical Committees devoted to all the fields of geotechnical engineering.
Among other things, geotechnical engineering is dealing with natural risks in which the ground may be involved in what we call geo-disasters, like for instance earthquakes (including the damages on infrastructures and buildings due to soil liquefaction), landslides (that often results from heavy rains), failure of dams and other geotechnical structures like tunnels, foundations of infrastructures or retaining walls.
The ISSMGE has a Committee called "Geo-Engineers without Barriers" (GeoWB) specially devoted to propose to countries affected by geo-disasters to send volunteering geotechnical engineers to prepare a short report aimed at i) better understanding the causes of the geo-disaster and ii) propose possible prevention measures for disaster risk reduction in the future. ISSMGE may cover the cost of the mission.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
